Gerald Gebhart, PhD, Editor, The Journal of Pain
In its second year of publication as the American Pain Societys peer-reviewed scientific journal, The Journal of Pain has grown from a quarterly to a bimonthly journal in 2001. By the end of 2001, the journal will have published clinical research (53% of papers), basic research (35%), critical review articles, and case reports. The current acceptance rate is 55%; the rejection rate is 45%. The average time from submission to first decision is 4.6 weeks, and each paper is typically reviewed by three referees. Authors from 20 countries have submitted to the journal, 70% coming from the United States.
Contributors are now able to submit manuscripts online and increasing numbers of authors are using this option. Since this tool was introduced at the beginning of this year, about one-third of new manuscripts have been submitted online. Manuscripts are then transferred to referees electronically; in most cases, this expedites the review time substantially. The submission tool, an easy four-step process, is available at www.ampainsoc.org. Revised manuscripts also can be submitted online.
Because of growing interest among authors, the journal will increase the number of pages published in 2002. In addition, the journal applied for indexing in April of this year with Index Medicus. Current indices include the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Excerpta Medica/ EMBASE, Neuroscience Citation Index, PsycINFO, and Research Alert.
