Dear Residency Program Director and Coordinator,

This year the American Pain Society (APS) plans to offer their Annual Scientific Meeting in Washington DC, May 3 – May 5, 2007. For the fifth consecutive year, North Shore-LIJ Health System, in collaboration with the American Pain Society, will present an intensive two-day pre-conference entitled, “The Essentials of Pain Management: Principles and Practice,” for which scholarships will be offered to 3rd and 4th year residents in anesthesiology, neurology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, family medicine and emergency medicine. This multidisciplinary program will be held at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, Arlington, Virginia on May 1 and May 2, 2007. Each participant’s scholarship will cover this two day intensive training, and registration to the APS Annual Scientific Meeting, which begins May 3 and concludes on May 5, as well as a complimentary one-year membership to the American Pain Society, round trip transportation costs, hotel accommodations and a food stipend. This program is sponsored by the American Pain Society.

The field of pain medicine has literally exploded over the last decade with an incredible wealth of basic scientific information as well as clinical information regarding assessment and therapeutics now available. This course, developed by a group of dedicated pain professionals within the American Pain Society, is designed to provide each participant with a foundation that, along with participation in the remainder of the American Pain Society meeting, will provide each resident with an enjoyable and significant educational experience. Each member of the faculty is nationally recognized leader in pain management. The APS is proud to sponsor this program as an important component in their pain management education and is grateful for the support of this initiative provided by Endo Pharmaceuticals through an educational grant.

We are hopeful that you will be able to identify two qualified candidates from your program to attend this intensive training. Space is limited. Only candidates who are interested in pursuing an academic career involving pain management and can commit to attending the full program, i.e., May 1 through May 5, 2007, should apply. Please complete the application and fax it to Mary B. Strong at (516) 465-8204 or email the materials to mstrong@nshs.edu as soon as possible (deadline is December 15, 2006). Candidates will be contacted and further details provided upon receipt and review of the application. If there are any questions about the program, please contact Mary B. Strong, Program Coordinator at (516) 465-2500.

Sincerely,
Charles E. Argoff, M.D.
