American Pain Society Annual Scientific Meeting
May 6-8, Baltimore

Journalists are cordially invited to cover proceedings of the 29th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Pain Society, May 6-8 at the Baltimore Convention Center. APS is the leading multidisciplinary professional organization in the United States dedicated to advancing pain-related research, education, treatment and team-oriented professional practice.

Some 2,000 scientists and clinicians specializing in pain and pain management are expected to attend. Scientific sessions will cover a wide range of topics on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of acute pain, chronic cancer and non-cancer pain and recurrent pain. Pain research also is a major focus of the meeting. Many of the nation’s leading pain researchers will present their latest discoveries in panel and poster presentations. Topics to be covered in plenary sessions and panels at the meeting include:

***Scanning the Whole Genome to Unravel Pain: In a plenary session, Richard Woolf, PhD will report on new tools and approaches to determine which genes can help identify pain mechanisms, therapeutic targets and biomarkers. New genomic strategies can lead to personalized medical approaches to pain management.

***Pain and PTSD Among Returning Military Personnel: A expert panel of VA pain specialists will describe an integrated model of care for treatment of the spectrum of pain disorders and brain injuries suffered by returning troops.

***Virtual Reality and Pain Management: Can video games help children with pain problems? Experts will report on research on the use of different virtual reality techniques used to manage recurrent or chronic pain.
