PublicationsAPS Bulletin Volume 7, Number 1, January/February 1997Resource ReviewJohn D. Loeser, MD, Department Editor A Practical Approach to Pain ManagementReviewed by John D. Loeser, MD M.F. Lefkowitz, A.H. Lebovits, D. J. Wiody, & S.A. Rubin, Little, Brown & Co., Boston, 1996, $36.95, 336 pages, ISBN 0-316-51958-8 This is a paperback book in outline format by an array of authors who address multiple topics in the treatment of a wide array of pains. There are appropriate illustrations in the form of line drawings, multiple tables, and a good index. Some chapters have selected readings, others have extensive references. Some have a solid scientific basis, others are personal treatment strategies with which some could take issue. Authoritativeness is not synonymous with factual support! Most of the chapters are quite complete in their discussion of treatment options. This could be a useful book for pain fellows or similar trainees. The price is good. If you enjoy reading outlines, this book may be right for you. I prefer prose, or even poetry. John D. Loeser is professor of neurological surgery and anesthesiology and director of the Multidisciplinary Pain Center at the University of Washington in Seattle. |
