Report from the Psychosocial SIG

Francis J. Keefe, PhD, and Sandra J. Waters, PhD

We had a positive response to the data blitz held during the Psychosocial Special Interest Group meeting on Saturday, March 23, at the APS Annual Scientific Meeting.

A data blitz is an opportunity to present late-breaking findings from a study your research team has recently conducted. Each data blitz presenter had 5 minutes (strictly enforced) to present three overheads. Baseball was the theme of this year’s data blitz. The “lineup” featured nine players and one “reliever” (researchers) who stepped up to the plate before a rowdy group of “fans” (the audience), to describe results from a current research project.

This session’s lineup included Jennifer Haythornthwaite, Ray Tait, Michael Geisser, Christopher Eccleston, Bob Jamison, Rob Edwards, Scott Brown, Warren Nielson, Frank Keefe, and Mark Jensen. Presentation time was closely monitored, and the fans called players “out” at the end of each 5-minute period, even if their presentations had not ended (no mercy was shown). Despite the strict time limitations, the atmosphere was informal and fun, fostering lively interchange between the researchers and audience. The format was a great success, and those present agreed to continue the data blitz format next year.

We hope all members of the Psychosocial SIG will join us at the data blitz to be held at next year’s Annual Scientific Meeting. If you have late-breaking findings you’d like to report as the meeting approaches, be sure to volunteer for the “lineup.”

David A. Williams, PhD, Department Editor, invites APS Special Interest Group (SIG) chairs to submit SIG-related news to daveawms@umich.edu.
